The only Kettleness tour available, this itinerary is aimed at fit, adult enthusiasts and those who want a longer tour in a more demanding location. It involves over 2 miles of walking that some will find challenging.

SUITABILITY RATING – NOT ideal for families or complete beginners. Not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. No public facilities after tour commences. This is NOT a tour for everyone.

Level: Advancing, Intermediate. Can be strenuous. Get in touch if you are in doubt.

Age range: Over 12s only

Terrain: Long beach walk, muddy paths, boulder fields, steep steps, slippery rock platform and cobbled beach. Wet boot itinerary.

START LOCATIONSteps and path just below the door of the cafe.

PARKING – Runswick Bank Bottom Car Park, Bank Bottom Hill, TS13 5HT is at the bottom of the hill near the start location. In Summer and on busy weekends this is regularly full, with the nearest parking at the top of the village. Allow 20 mins to park car and get to the start location. Around £6 cash pay and display all day

Itinerary The 3-4 hour tour starts at Runswick Bay and follows the receding tide out to Kettleness. It combines beach, cliff sections, old jet mines, rockfalls, boulder field scrambling and rock platforms at the water’s edge. You must be prepared for off path walking in potentially wet conditions. Good walking boots, gloves and waterproofs are a must. Bring water, snacks or a meal as there are no facilities once the tour has begun. Once at beach level, your guide Steve will help you find some interesting fossils and explain how to hunt for the local specialities, golden pyrite fossils and Whitby Jet.

The tour starts at the advertised start time so please come about 15 minutes before.
