SUITABILITY – Ideal for families, beginners, and amateurs. Not suitable for children under 6 years old or for adults with mobility issues.
LEVEL: Intermediate & Beginner – Over 2 miles walked, including muddy slope, weed-covered rocks, pooled water, uneven and slippery surfaces. This is a wet boot itinerary.
START LOCATION – Outside “Natural Wonders” Fossil Shop, Grape Lane, Whitby, YO22 4BA
FINISH LOCATION – Whitby Holiday Park, Saltwick Bay – from here it is a 1 mile walk back to Whitby Abbey via the clifftop Cleveland Way
Parking – Option 1 : park in town/Whitby Abbey, and walk back via the Cleveland Way at the end of the tour (25 mins). Option 2 : Park outside Whitby Holiday Park (Saltwick Bay), and walk to the starting point in town pre-tour (25 mins).
Itinerary
Push back further in time than Whitby’s Victorian gothic heritage and uncover a truly fascinating history of deep time. Your guide Steve reveals stories of the stones to reveal ancient environments, whilst pointing out fossils and geological features along this dramatic coastal stretch. You will see dinosaur footprints and fossils of Jurassic Sea Creatures, whilst learning how to find and identify these ancient rarities. Steve will also help you understand the local gemstone – Whitby Jet, and on a good day – maybe find some upon the shore line.
This >3 hour tour combines academic knowledge with the message of responsible collection within Whitby’s North York Moor National Park’ ‘Outdoor Museum’ – a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest for its Fossils and Geological Heritage.
