The quintessential Yorkshire Coast fossil location lies just beyond Whitby’s East Pier, and extends to Saltwick Bay further East. The section of scar below Whitby Abbey has a rich heritage of geological significance as many historical discoveries of sea reptiles were made here. Exploring this protected site with a professional guide will reveal dinosaur footprints, plant fossils, jet, marine reptiles and many kinds of ammonite. Understanding and respecting the Protected Status of this SSSI site preserves this heritage for future generations. Loose fossil finds can be kept, whilst those embedded in bedrock remain for all visitors to appreciate.
A facilitated tour with one of our professional guides is the best way to discover this amazing fossil location. Tailored itineraries are arranged to suit the objectives of any group wanting a bespoke fossil-hunting experience.
Our Earth Scientist guides curate individually designed tours that follow best practice in accessing sites for responsible collecting. Private tours consider the unique safety factors of each location and are arranged to suit tides, adventure level, age and ability of the hiring party. Due to monthly tidal variations, it is not always possible to embark on the full Whitby to Saltwick Itinerary, but other tours are available during regular low tides.
Summer availability is extremely limited. Please book early for Autumn and 2025 dates
