Redcar Beach is an often overlooked location on the Yorkshire / Cleveland Coast, but is one of the best places for unique finds with it’s rapidly eroding death beds and lower Jurassic storm sequences. With consistent mollusc fossil finds including many rare ammonites not found elsewhere, it is a very special location. Through expert knowledge, the geoheritage of the site is revealed – a suburban outdoor museum of the very early Jurassic period, when our planet recovered from one of the big Five mass extinctions. As a Protected SSSI, the berdock geology cannot be collected from, but there are many spectacular finds that come from loose blocks and shingle. After scouring conditions, visits to this site can also include a tour of the prehistoric forest, where trees buried several thousand years ago are preserved in a post-glacial peat, an ancient floodplain of the River Tees
Redcar is the best location for participants with mobility and access issues. Arrangements can be made for beach-going mobility scooters hireable from the location.
Private tours are available throughout the year, and are arranged to suit tides, adventure level, age and ability of the hiring party. Our fossil guides consider the unique safety factors required for safe and responsible collecting at this location.

Due to monthly tidal variations, it is not always possible to embark on fossil hunts in all locations, however Redcar has some of the best access of all Yorkshire-Cleveland locations.
