START LOCATION – Benches on the Hill at the top of the beach path, just past the cafe.
PARKING – A small, busy car park can be found at the bottom of the hill near the start position. Runswick Car Park, Bank Bottom Hill, TS13 5HT. In Summer and on busy weekends this is regularly full, with the nearest parking at the top of the village. Allow 20 mins to park car and get to the start location
Level: Advancing, Intermediate. Can be strenuous. Get in touch if you are in doubt.
Age range: Over 8 only
Terrain: Long beach walk, muddy paths, boulder fields, steep steps, slippery rock platform and cobbled beach
The 3-4 hour tour starts at Runswick Bay and follows the receding tide out to Kettleness. It combines beach, cliff sections, old jet mines, rockfalls, boulder field sections and rock platforms at the water’s edge. You must be prepared for offroad walking in potentially wet conditions, good walking boots, gloves and waterproofs are a must. Bring water, snacks or a meal as there are no facilities once the tour has begun. Once at beach level our tour guide will help you find some interesting fossils and explain how to hunt for the local specialities, golden pyrite fossils and Whitby Jet.
The tour starts at the advertised start time so please come about 15 minutes before.
A fascinating 3-4 hour tour that is bound to please but due to the terrain this is for intermediate to advanced levels only. We therefore have an no under 8 year olds policy on this trip.
